Civil Society in Mexico

The number of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) has significantly increased in recent years world wide, participating more actively in different fields. Nowadays almost 40 million people and more than 190 million volunteers work for these institutions.

In Mexico more than 10,700 NGO work in areas as diverse as health, education, environment, social development, human rights, social assistance, and sports or culture promotion. These organizations can be civil societies or associations, Private Assistance Institutions (I.A.P. in Spanish) or Private Beneficence Institutions (I.B.P.). The later two are subject to an Assistance Board, which regulates and supervises them and is part of the government. Their income comes primarily from service fees rather than from philanthropy.

Nacional Monte de Piedad is a Private Assistance Institution (I.A.P) and grants donations to I.A.P. or I.B.P. institutions only.
