1. What is an IAP/PAI or IBP/PBI?
The Private Assistance Institutions or Private Beneficence Institutions are non-governmental associations that use private funds to carry out social assistance actions with non-profit purposes. They are regulated by the Board of Assistance of each state.

 

2. What is a NGO?
A Non-governmental Organization is a private association of people with humanitarian and social goals defined by its members. It is created independently from local and nationwide governments and international organizations. Legally, it adopts different status such as an association, a foundation, a corporation or a cooperative, among others. The parties that integrate the NGOs are denominated as civil society organizations, non-profitable sector, solidarity sector, social economy and third sector. The term Non-governmental Organization (NGO) was first used after the invitation made by the UN, in the 1960’s, to several social organizations to attend their meetings as guests. The NGOs are involved in national and international affairs. There is a wide variety of topics and issues that define their work and development, such as humanitarian aid, public health, research, economical growth, human development, culture, human rights, technologic transference, ecology, etc...

 

3. What is philanthropy?
Philanthropy is the love for the human race and everything that is related to humanity in it most positive and constructive sense, expressed by helping others without any exchange or implied interest in retribution. The donations given to humanitarian organizations, people and communities or the efforts to help others (directly or through a Non-governmental Organization [NGO] with nonprofit ends) with the specific goal of helping other living beings and improve their life quality, are considered philanthropic acts.

 

4. What is the Board of Assistance?
The Board of Assistance (Junta de Asistencia Privada) is a governmental division of state level that is in charge of the regulation and supervision of the private assistance institutions in the state.

 

5. What is a SCO?
A Social Civil Organization is another name with which Non-governmental Organizations are known and they are private organizations with humanitarian means.

 

6. What is the Third sector?
The sector integrated by NGOs is named in different ways, such as civil society organizations, volunteer sector, non-profitable sector, solidarity sector, social economy, third sector and social sector. The economic activity derived from the third sector is known as social economy, which is differenced from the public sector economy field and the private economy of Capitalist nature.
